Old Key West

Recently I spent a few days at Disney World in Florida. Here is a view of the hospitality house at Disney's Old Key West resort at dusk looking northeast from Peninsular Road. Felt tip marker on tracing paper, 5 1/2" by 4 1/2" original size, with sky tone added later using Paint Shop Pro, drawn May, 2012.

Greatest Hits

Coming up to six months since I established this blog, I thought that the audience might like to know which posts have been viewed the most. The view of the Tuileries from Place de la Concorde in Paris (top sketch) has received the most hits, followed closely by the sketch of Paris' L'Arc de Triomphe (middle sketch). The most hits in one day goes to the watercolor of Bunny's Liquors in Urbana, IL (bottom sketch). Now, how does one explain the audience's interest? Some of it has to do with the subject matter of the sketches, I suppose; or it might be the medium that the drawing was done in; or it could be the style of the sketching technique. In order to make it easier to find a type of sketch or technique or media, I recently added more labeling gadgets.

O'Hare Office Corridor

A cartoonish view looking east along the Kennedy Expressway from the Dee Road bridge near O'Hare airport. The small office building corridor is familiar to thousands of Chicago area rush hour motorists. Felt tip marker and pencil on tracing paper, approximately 8" by 6" original size, drawn March, 2012.

Russell's Barbecue

Before there was a McDonald's, there was Russell's. Serving barbecue sandwiches since 1930, Ray Kroc probably sold this establishment Multi-Mixers way before he sold them to the McDonald brothers. For me, the building evokes a monumental Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style house, several of which are nearby: the simple volumes, the broad low-pitched roof with overhanging eaves, the horizontal bands of windows and wall materials. Felt tip marker on tracing paper, approximately 6" by 8" original size, drawn on site, March, 2012.

There had to be a self-portrait sooner or later. A sketch of my reflection in a mirror at a café near the Gare Saint-Lazare. Dry tip marker on paper, approximately 4" by 7" original size, done April, 1972.

Café Bar

Sketch of a bar in a café in Versailles. Dry marker on paper, approximately 6" by 9", done February, 1972. Looking over all of my sketches for this time period, I have noticed that my style of drawing varies a lot. Sometimes the linework is confident and at other times, as in this drawing and subsequent drawings I will post, it is more feathery and tentative, especially when drawing people. For the most part though, I have always considered myself to be a deliberative sketcher.

Vence

Another view of Vence. The upper illustration is approximately 7" by 10", pencil on paper, drawn on site, December, 1971. The lower illustration of the same subject, done in a more abstract style later, is felt tip marker on paper. If the scenes of Vence appear that the town was deserted of people, it was, in fact, not. But the sketches were done in early afternnon, when people activity was more subdued.
